First-Time Thailand Itinerary: Bangkok Neighborhood & Travel Tips for a December–January Trip

Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I (both 25) are heading to Thailand for the first time this December–January — about 3 weeks total. We land in Bangkok early morning, so we’ll have a full first day to dive in!

We’re not huge partiers but love having some life and energy around us — think chill nightlife, good food, and easy walks to shops and cafes. Clean and comfy beats wild and loud for us.

Right now, we’re planning 4 nights in Bangkok at the start and 1 night before flying home (might do 3+2 depending on what fits best). Definitely doing Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and we’re debating the beach part — maybe Phuket, but open to ideas.

We’re thinking 60% city, 40% beach, love local markets, and want spots that are walkable and easy to connect between city and islands.

For Bangkok neighborhoods, we’re torn between:

Sukhumvit (Phrom Phong / Thonglor / Asok): modern, lots of cafes and malls, great BTS links

Siam / Siam Square: central, perfect for shopping and eating

Riverside (near ICONSIAM / Chao Phraya): chill vibes, scenic, good for ferries

Would love to hear where you think first-timers should stay! Anywhere that balances convenience, comfort, and that classic Bangkok buzz?
