Why Are Thailand Hotel Prices So Expensive Now? (Compared to Last Year’s Travel Vlogs)

While planning a February trip to Thailand, I noticed something surprising. Many travel vloggers from last year were staying in beautiful hotels for $20–$40 USD per night, but when I check those same places on Booking.com or Agoda, current prices show $100–$200 per night.

Is this a recent spike in Thailand hotel rates, or could it be because I’m booking too early?
Since many vloggers visited during the same travel season, I’m wondering what’s changed to cause such a big jump in prices.

    You’re not imagining it — Thailand hotel prices have definitely risen since 2023, but there are clear reasons and a few workarounds.

    1. High season + full recovery
    Tourism bounced back hard after COVID, and hotels that underpriced themselves to survive are now charging normal (or slightly higher) rates. From November–March, demand is massive, especially in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and the islands — so even mid-range rooms jump to $60–80 a night.

    2. Exchange rate effects
    It’s not just Thai prices. The U.S. dollar and euro have both weakened against the baht recently, so even if Thai hotels charge the same in THB, it feels more expensive in foreign currency.

    3. Supply shift after COVID
    Many cheap guesthouses closed permanently. Fewer budget rooms = less competition = higher prices.

    4. The vlogger illusion
    Most of those YouTube “$25 luxury stay in Bangkok” videos were filmed in 2022–23 or during monsoon/low season. Some vloggers also get sponsored stays, so their prices don’t reflect reality.
